Local SEO for small business, the honest version
Local SEO for small business has been oversold for a decade, which is why most owners assume it is either magic or a scam.
It is neither. It is a short list of unglamorous things done consistently, and here is the honest breakdown of what matters and what does not.
The map results and the blue links are two different games
When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a map with three businesses first, then the regular results below. Most local calls come from that map pack.
The map pack is driven mostly by your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and how close you are to the searcher. The links below are driven by your website. You need both, but if you only have budget for one, start with the profile.
Distance is real and nobody likes it
You will rank better for searches near your actual location. A shop on the east side of town will struggle to appear in map results on the west side, no matter how good its SEO is.
Anyone promising to rank you across an entire metro from one address is selling you something. The realistic goal is to dominate your own area and compete honestly at the edges.
What actually moves the needle
In rough order of impact for most small businesses:
- A complete, correctly categorized Google Business Profile with real photos
- A steady stream of genuine reviews, and replies to them
- Your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere they appear online
- A page on your site for each real service you offer, written for people rather than search engines
- A page for each area you genuinely serve, with something specific to say about it
- A website that loads fast and works properly on a phone
What you can safely ignore
Keyword density tools. Meta keyword tags, which have been dead for years. Directory submission packages that list you on two hundred sites nobody visits. Buying links. Publishing thin location pages with the town name swapped out, which Google recognizes and discounts.
Also ignore anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Nobody can promise that, because nobody controls the results.
How long it takes
Profile fixes can shift things in weeks. Review momentum shows up over two to three months. Website content usually takes three to six months to earn its position.
This is why we are cautious about short contracts and instant-result promises. Local SEO rewards patience, and the businesses that win are the ones that keep doing the boring parts after the novelty wears off.
